As well as the visitor centre itself, to be built just outside the perimeter of The Royal Mint鈥檚 secure boundary, ISG will build a dedicated car park on nearby land owned by The Royal Mint and a footbridge over a river to link the car park to the building.
The visitor centre will showcase coin minting operations to the public for the first time in the organisation鈥檚 1,000-year history.
The single-storey, steel frame building will feature a burnished stainless steel cladding system to its fa莽ade. The cladding has been designed in a 50p-piece-style hexagonal configuration and in multiple shades to create a colour change effect that varies with natural light conditions.
Targeting a BREEAM Very Good environmental performance rating, the building includes a large interactive exhibition space, along with a visitor caf茅, including full catering kitchen, and classroom space for visiting school parties.
ISG western regional director Jon James said: 鈥淭he Royal Mint is the UK鈥檚 oldest manufacturer and currently produces currency for around 60 countries. The visitor centre will provide an opportunity for visitors to see a coin minting operation of world renown.
