Huddersfield’s Grade II* listed George Hotel, vacant since 2013, is being refurbished to create a new 108-room hotel, with a bar, restaurant, gym and conference facilities.

Once complete, the landmark building – opposite the town’s railway station – will be operated by Radisson Hotel Group, becoming the first Radisson Red hotel in Yorkshire.

GMI has been involved in the £30m project for the past two years, collaborating on the design with Kirklees Council, which acquired the building in August 2020. The challenge has been to balance heritage preservation while improving commercial viability.

The revised plans were approved in October 2025 as part of the Huddersfield Blueprint regeneration programme; main construction works are now starting.

The scheme will preserve the hotel’s stone façade, maintaining its frontage on St Georges Square. To the rear, there will be two new storeys of accommodation added in a style designed not to jar with the original architecture.

Ed Weston, GMI’s regional Director for Yorkshire, said: “As a Yorkshire company, we are proud to be delivering this landmark project that will restore an important part of Huddersfield’s heritage while supporting long-term economic growth and community revitalisation. The transformation of The George Hotel reflects a shared commitment to exceptional delivery, combining precision, care and respect for the building’s historic significance.â€

Cllr Graham Turner, Kirklees Council’s cabinet member for finance and regeneration, added: “The transformation of the George Hotel is one of the major projects of the Huddersfield Blueprint and regenerating the town centre. It is a gateway building into the town which, when renovated, can boost our local economy and be perfectly placed for visitors to stay.â€
